Apartment Review for Crawford Square Apartments - Pittsburgh, PA

I lived here for three months and one day on the way home from school (I go to Duquesne University), I was mugged by two African-American criminals about my age right behind my apartment. I was tackled from behind, my face ground into the cement, and had my wallet and my keys taken from me. I immediately went down to the Crawford leasing office to get my locks changed. They changed my apartment keys right away, but it took them over two weeks (and multiple phone calls) to change the building locks. Translated: the criminals, who had no problem mugging me in broad daylight, had 24/7 access to the building for 2 weeks before Crawford did anything about it. It doesn't seem like that bad of a neighborhood, but it is. Just try driving outside the complex and you'll see exactly what I mean. And it's not like I was walking home alone in the middle of the night when I got robbed. It was 4pm on a Tuesday, rush hour was beginning. There were people every where around me, but that didn't deter the criminals. They got away before anyone could catch up to them. I would honestly be afraid to walk around there at night if that is what people in the neighborhood are willing to do. Overall, the Crawford staff was very helpful, but do not believe them when they say it is a safe neighborhood. It isn't at all. I even specifically asked the staff before I signed a lease if they have had any problems and she offered me a resounding "No." However, after my incident, I went to one of my law professors for advice on the lease, and he surprised me when he said that 5 (yes, five) other students had come to him with isolated incidents in that apartment complex.
